JONATHAN EDELHUBER: READING ROOM

NOV 7 - DEC 6, 2025

“My first art books were these tiny pocket-sized art books on the Masters. My mom and dad gave them to me back in the 90s and I still have them in my studio. The book drawings and paintings came about because I wanted to paint a still life of some sort and needed to find my way of doing it. The paintings with the book spines alone are verging on abstract. They're mostly about line, color, and surface, but the names of the books and artists do hold a great deal of importance. They're artists I like, of course, but they're also a cognitive curation in a way. Most of the time (if not all of the time) the artists within the composition are related in some way or another.” - Jonathan Edelhuber

JONATHAN EDELHUBER: READING ROOM

NOV 7 - DEC 6, 2025

In the artist’s fourth solo presentation with ZieherSmith, Jonathan Edelhuber lays bare his inspirations in both style and direct representation of a vast library of monographs of current and past masters, which subsequently act as platform for a sculpture based on a drawing or painting by one of his forebears. With a variety of styles and scales, Edelhuber will also show his largest canvas to date, a monumental, reclining female figure featuring the spines of over 75 art books.

Rose Wylie and Richard Prince vie for shelf space with Pablo Picasso and Hilma af Klint, Richard Scarry shares equal territory with Jean Michel Basquiat: Edelhuber’s approach to art history is as much kid in a candy store meets connoisseur with an auction catalog as it is 21st century internet native down several rabbit holes at once. Nothing impedes his vision; however, the maximal conceptual approach befits his abundant technical facilities, hard at work with a modicum of levity, working hard not to take himself too seriously.

Arkansas-born and raised, now living and working in Clarksville, Tennessee, Edelhuber has exhibited widely, in group, solo and art fair presentations from New York City, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Miami, Los Angeles, and beyond.
