Louise Jones (neé Chen) is a second-generation Chinese American, born in Los Angeles in 1988. Her artistic practice centers around painting, while her background is in drawing and printmaking at UCSC. Her work first gained recognition after moving to Detroit in 2014, where she began painting murals of flowers, subject matter often chosen for their importance regionally, culturally and historically. Her affinity for painting botanical subjects stems from an early introduction to Georgia O’Keeffe, exposure to the spiritual symbolism of flowers in Eastern religions, and a lifelong love of floral textile patterns. To date, her murals and paintings have been displayed in museums and public spaces, including the AKG Museum, Crystal Bridges Museum, Detroit Institute for the Arts, Dennos Museum, Henry Ford Cancer Pavilion, University of Michigan Museum of Art, New Britain Museum of American Art, the North Carolina Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian Archives of American Art.
“Often, it takes a long time to see the things that are right in front of us, rather than what we wish to perceive. Making paintings feels like honoring that which often is overlooked - reassessing ones first perspective, and making small, fleeting moments immortalized.”
ZieherSmith presentations: ART021 (Shanghai 2024); Untitled Miami Beach (2023); Isn’t It Romantic (Nashville, 2022)
