Dan Mandelbaum "cube study 2"

While in residing in Memphis, Dan Mandelbaum carved local limestone, evoking carving traditions from across worldwide cultures and time periods, as the artist looks to channel the universal human artistic impulse. The cube was discovered in antiquity, and associated with the nature of earth by Plato for whom the Platonic solids are named. In modern art history, one thinks to the minamalist forms of artists like Sol LeWitt. Cube Study 2 isn’t a true cube and its cartoon-like figure epitomizes Mandelbaum’s juxtoposition of ancient and contemporary aesthetics.
